3/26/2024-3/29/2024

Supply list (please label your supplies)

What you need to bring:

• Scissors or thread snips

• Seam ripper

• Soft pencil and/or disappearing marker for shibori marking on cloth

• One permanent black marker, such as “Sharpie” or “Rub-A-Dub” for marking your name

on the fabric

• Roll masking tape (partial roll is fine – any width)

• Rubber gloves:

1 pair that is at least 5-8 inches above your wrist for indigo dyeing

(Harbor Freight has inexpensive long gloves)

a few pair of disposable gloves for the discharge process

• A handful of rubber bands

• Paper dust mask to use with the discharge process

• Smock/apron, work clothes and even old shoes you don’t mind getting dirty.

Fabric

8-10 yards of washed and dried cellulose cloth such as: cotton, linen, hemp, ramie or any combination of these. The cloth

can be white or light in color to dye in the indigo vat, or it can be already dyed with indigo, hand dyed with synthetic dyes or

natural dyes to discharge directly without indigo. It is fine to bring t-shirts, socks, scarves, etc, to work on.

Do not bring rayon, tencel, bamboo, silk or wool. These fibers shred when exposed to the discharge process.

Optional items that are handy to have if you are driving.

• Shapes for clamping: jar lids, wood or plexi shapes – to clamp fabric in-between. Bring round, square, rectangle, or

asymmetrical shapes. You need pairs or multiples of each shape, they don’t need to be thick. You can cut your own from

Plexiglas or any type of wood, even plywood, or get them as shapes at JoAnn Fabrics, Michaels, or The Dollar Store.

• 4-6 clamping devices you wish to bring (c-clamps, bulldog, paper clips, squeeze/spring clamps, bag clip, hair clips, etc.)

When looking for spring clamps – choose the plastic ones, instead of the ones that are mostly metal (I use 6” and 9” the

most). The folded fabric and shaped blocks need to fit between the jaws of the clamps.

• Cone/spool of cord and/or string: crocket cotton, cotton weaving warp, kitchen string, light-weight twine, various

thicknesses are fine, for pole wrapping techniques.

• Spray bottle (I find small ones at the dollar store).

• One - 3’ to 4’ length of polypropylene or nylon braided or coiled rope, 1/2” or larger diameter (from boating supply stores

and hardware stores).

• PVC plumbing pipe: one or more 1-3 foot lengths of 1”-4” diameter PVC plumbing pipe – smaller diameter is okay. Do not

bring any piece longer than 3 feet.

• One 4-10 liter plastic pail for rinse water.

• Hand sewing needles - I like Millinery size 9, Quilt Basting size 7, and Doll Making needles. I will also bring needles and

thread for hand stitching, for everyone to share.

• We will be stitching, clamping, and pole wrapping shibori patterns on cellulose cloth. Bring tools that you like to use for

preparing the cloth for your favorite shibori patterns.

• We will also be applying potato, paste, and clay resists to the cloth. You are welcome to bring a small selection of printing

blocks, stencils, and stamping supplies to create patterns on the cloth.

• Some of your work to share for show and tell.
