An intensive 4 days botanical dyeing and screen printing workshop

Natural dyes are regaining popularity. Surprisingly, even some of their disadvantages seem to turn out as benefits: some extend of inpredictability, complex shades, dependance on mordant… All these features including the possibility of contact dyeing with plants (botanical printing/ecoprint) give the dyer endless possibilities and  make the process very exciting.  During this class, you will learn to combine botanical prints with natural dyes such as indigo, madder, logwood and cochineal; two other  groups of compounds, tannins and metal salts, will help to make the images sharp, the colors deep and sustainable. There is always some “magic”, but the more you know, the more you can control the processes. We will  provide you the basics which you can then use in your own work in order to develop your own dying style. Natural inks represent the other important tool.

The first day will be dedicated to cotton/linen/viscose, the second day to silk, but the participants are free to concentrate on one kind of fabric. We will make a lot of samples and one bigger project like 1-2 shawls or fabric yardage. The third and fourth day will be dedicated to screen printing with natural dye paste and/or discharge paste. You will add finish to your piece; in particular, calligraphy adds harmony to botanical prints.

Participants are welcome to bring their favorite plants, we’ll work mostly with local plants from Florida.

Invited Guest Speaker: Olga Kazanskaya- Developer of "Original Medium-Print Techniques"
