There are an infinite number of ways one can bind, stitch, fold, twist, or compress cloth for shibori, and each way results in very different patterns. Each method is used to achieve a certain result, but each method is also used to work in harmony with the type of cloth used.

Itajime shibori is a shaped-resist technique. Traditionally, the cloth is sandwiched between two pieces of wood, which are held in place with string. More modern textile artists can be found using shapes cut from acrylic or plexiglass and holding the shapes with C-clamps. The shapes prevent the dye from penetrating the fabric they cover. This class is an  exploration of how the different folds and the location, shape, and size of the wood boards influence the overall pattern.Several different folds will be demonstrated.. We will use a variety of premixed reactive dye as well as the indigo dye vat .You will also be given a silk scarf to dye any way you want.  More fabric and scarves will be available to purchase.  By the end of the workshop you will have learned several different  clamped patterns

Supply list:

• Various clamps in different sizes-(instructor has a large supply but if you have you may want to bring your own- will get wet)

Blocks of wood/ plexi-glass, cut to shape and size (instructor also has a large supply, but again you may wish to bring your own in particular shapes; triangles, circles, squares, rectangles)

• Several types of large denier string or cord such as crochet cotton, cotton weaving warp, and kitchen string…the more different kinds the better. Five yards of each kind.

• Playtex-type household Rubber gloves that comes at least 4-5 inches beyond your wrists.

• Respirator – with acid/chlorine filter – if you have one. I will have one for use in class.

• 10 trash trash or ziploc bags white or clear only. These are to take home any wet fabric.

• Bring 2-3 yards of prepared for dying (PDF) fabric. It is essential you prewash the fabric even though it is PDF. Use the hottest water possible and longest cycle. Wash with Synthrapol or any liquid detergent that does not contain bleach or fabric softener. Dry in machine or on line. DO NO USE FABRIC softener. DO NOT treat with Soda Ash.
