Japanese Shibori Dyeing- Intro to Shibori

from 80.00

“ Shibori’ is the Japanese term used for techniques in which dye is controlled to create beautiful designs and patterns. Methods include folding, twisting, tying and clamping.  The techniques are easy to learn and require no experience. Your personal choice of color and design will ensure highly individual results. This course is suitable for complete beginners but those who have done some shibori and would like to develop their skills further will also benefit.

Many shibori techniques derive from those used in indigo dyeing. In this course some traditional methods have been adapted to use with synthetic dyes on silk.

Students will be able to take one scarf home at the end of the day . Students who find they have enough time are welcome to make more scarves but only one is included in the material expenses. Extra scarves are available from the instructor. Students may also bring  an article of clothing they wish to upcycle with shibori dyeing!

Skills/Techniques Covered

Students will learn a little about dyes being used and how they are mixed, applied and fixed. They will watch a demonstration of tied, clamped and folded designs and will then be able to choose which methods they want to use to prepare their samples, scarves and clothing items.

Additional information will be offered to students who wish to take the technique further after the course, in the form of a handout with booklists and websites.
