John Marshall is an American fiber artist specializing in natural dyes and the traditional Japanese techniques of katazome (stencil dyeing) and tsutsugaki (cone drawing). He is internationally noted for his use of color and line to create truly unique one-of-a-kind art-to-wear, turning traditionally inspired aesthetics into contemporary treasures for daily life.

As a teacher he is recognized for his ability to adapt traditional recipes and methods to suit local climates, resources, and temperaments – and for his ability to distill complex techniques into easy-to-understand steps

In conjunction with the indigo exhibit at the Morikami, OUT OF THE BLUE Japanese Indigo Textiles, and following John Marshall's lecture at the Morikami on December 8, Singing the Blues: Traditional Japanese IndigoAya Fiber Studios will be offering a three-day survey of working with Japanese indigo including how to create a vat from dried fresh leaves, direct painting with indigo pigment, working with rice-paste resist, printing with indigo, and much more! A wonderful way to compliment your palette with this easy to grow plant. For more information about John and his approach to working with Japanese indigo, check out his blog and JohnMarshall.to/blog and enter "indigo" in the search box.

Materials fee:$150, this covers all consumables including silks, cottons, and bast fibers; indigo in many forms; pre-pasted silk pieces; and a DVD with movie clips and all recipes needed to keep you going once you're back in your own studio.
