Natural Dye Study

March 27-30, 2018

$625.00

This class will be an in-depth look at natural dye processes for both cellulose and silk with an emphasis on sustainable practice.

During the workshop we will investigate the mordanting and dyeing of cellulose for even immersion dyeing. This will include the use of tannins and mordant options. Silk will be dyed using a traditional mordant and also a middle-mordant process.

Also, participants will explore printing with natural dyes using both mordant printing and direct application of dyes.

$100 deposit will secure your space with balance payable before Feb 27, 2018

Our use of indigo will include the building and maintaining of an organic indigo vat, indigo discharge, and printing applications.

The class will complete many tests and experiments with the goal of developing a body of knowledge that students can ultimately apply to their own personal work. Each student will assemble a notebook of samples and reference materials.

For more than forty years Catharine Ellis has been a textile artist, maker, and educator. Her studio practice typically combines weaving and dyeing to create unique fabrics of woven shibori, an original technique. Catharine is the author of Woven Shibori (Interweave Press, published in 2005).  The book received major revisions and a new edition was released in 2016 that focuses on natural dyes. Along with co-author, Joy Boutrup, she is currently working on a natural dye book, which will be published in 2018.
