Marbling on SilkUsing age-old methods, colors are floated on a liquid thickened with carrageen moss, to create wonderful patterns which are then transferred onto silks and cottons. The ancient art of marbling onto fabrics provides endless possibilities for decorative surfaces which can be used as stand-alone works of art or form the basis for further embellishment such as embroidery, quilting, beadwork and more.
Part of Thursday Morning Series
Participants will prepare fabrics for dyeing with natural dyes. We will practice with onion skins, walnut shells, tea, and beet juice. A variety of mordants will be used to achieve different results.
Intro to Indigo Students will initially learn how an indigo vat is made. A vat will be prepared in the morning and the basic chemistry explained. Natural indigo powder will be used, and the vat will be ‘reduced’ using a commercially available chemical. While the vat develops, students will be shown several shibori techniques: a folded and clamped method, and a twisted and tied technique.
This workshop is an introduction to the Japanese art of Shibori and the stitching used to create unique patterns.. The Japanese have used stitching to resist dye in shibori for many years. This technique is used to create designs of many types. it is the combination of the stitch used and the arrangement of the fabric that make the patterns. The principal stitch used in Shibori is the running stitch or Ori-Nui. Some refer to stitched Shibori as drawing with thread. You will learn many different stitch patterns including: Mokume (wood grain); Ori-nui (running stitch);Maki-Nui (over sewn stitch);Maki-age (stitched and tied); Karamatsu (Japanese Larch/ radiating circle) & Komasu, and produce samples for future work. We will learn how to lay patterns out and then how to execute them.
Part of Thursday Morning Series
Participants will learn and practice alternatives to the traditional dye pot. We will use alternative dyeing techniques and will create a rainbow of colors.
