Class Description: Learn the joys of working with dyes that bond to silk while wet, need no heat setting and are non-toxic. During the workshop you will learn how to do a random design in a baggie and watch the water go clear as the dyes bond with the silk in seconds. The next step is to learn a sampling of 6 tabletop techniques to add contrast and detail which will include: soft and dynamic floral images, zebra stripes or sunset lines with casual pleats, transferring stamp images to silk and stencil tricks. Add to this repertoire choosing from a various casual shibori techniques to create repeat lines, growing trees, mandala with clothespins, abstract dynamic or a gradation of colors with dip dyeing. Note: Indigo color is possible with these dyes. Also create a hand dyed silk organza greeting card incorporating foil into the design as well as a simple watercolor type landscape on silk broadcloth (feels and sews like cotton). A demo of how to silk screen with the liquid dye concentrates thickened with shaving cream will be presented.
Supply kit for students: $25 includes 3 lightweight silk scarves 11 x 72 inch, card supplies, landscape fabric. Dyes and all supplies will be provided for the students.
Supply list for students to bring: dyeing clothes and a spirit of play. Other options but not required: a favorite foamy or rubber stamp, stencils, silk screen, gloves, small samples of silk to test with the dyes
