  • Mackenzie ***** Hi Suzanne and Natalie,I just wanted to thank you both for such a fantastic experience at the Marbling: Eco-Friendly Fabric Printing course! The entire setup was so well thought out and created a welcoming, comfortable, and inspiring environment for learning. The studio was wonderfully equipped ”everything from the large worktables and work sinks to the kitchenette and outdoor drying space. Suzanne, I really appreciated the care you put into the little details, like providing coffee and breakfast each morning (the donuts and coffee cake were such a treat!) and helping with lunch recommendations and catering orders. Your efforts to coordinate after-class activities, like group dinners, added such a nice touch for building connections among attendees and I'm only sorry I wasn't able to join you all. Natalie, the course itself was incredible! Your expertise in eco-friendly fabric printing is clear, and your generosity in sharing knowledge and tips made the experience both educational and approachable. I learned so much and really appreciated how you made space for everyone to feel included, no matter their skill level. I also wanted to mention how much I enjoyed the group dynamic. The attendees were so welcoming and collaborative, and it made such a difference to feel part of a supportive and non-pretentious group. As a hobbyist marbler and first-time class participant, I felt completely at ease. The only suggestion I have is to consider adding more weekend classes in the future. I imagine it could make these amazing opportunities more accessible for people who cant attend on weekdays due to work. Thank you both again for such a well-organized and inspiring experience. I hope to return for another class in the future!Mackenzie Marbling: Eco-Friendly Fabric Printing with Natalie Stopka

  • Sally ***** My third time attending a workshop. Delighted with my results . Suzanne is a very talented teacher and gives great advice. Signed up for another next month.! 3 DAY BOTANICAL PRINT WORKSHOP

  • Ginny ***** Betty Busby is a fabulous teacher! Now I know why her classes always sell out. We spent the first three days learning techniques working on three projects with handouts and "blab sessions" with slides each day. Since I had virtually no exposure to working in 3D (though I excelled in making clay coil pots in elementary school), it was wonderful to have a  introduction to how the materials work and respond to heat and water. Though we followed a set of guidelines, we each made our own patterns and it stretched my imagination to see how other students put their own twists on their work. We painted and overpainted fabric and cut and shaped fosshape and felt into fantastical columns, vessels, and other forms. The last two days of the class gave us the opportunity to continue experimenting with our new  techniques. Betty showed us new possibilities by asking questions on each of our pieces and pointing things out to the class so we could learn from each other. Incredibly, in this short period of time I learned lots about working in the third dimension as well surface design techniques of painting, colors, resists and more. I have rarely been with such a creative, fun, generous, energetic, thoughtful and supportive group of people. Aya Fiber Studio is a gem and taking a class there with Betty is a a treat. We had plenty of space to work, it wasn’t crowded with too many participants as sometimes can be the case.  Sue Stover was always available to help with our individual projects, as well as sharing her process and her wealth of knowledge and experience while giving us inspiration through presentation and demonstration.  I only hope that this workshop will return again to Aya Studio and add a few days to the length!  Ps.  Downtown Stuart is a lively and fun place with shops and restaurants by the water.  Very enjoyable in my experience. The abundance of provided supplies and studio equipment made it easy to work and process the papers we had.  Great creative atmosphere all around with studio, instructions, equipment, class mates and instructor.  Suzanne did a great job; clear instructions and demos; encouraged individual approaches and experimental ideas. Well paced with enough new things offered  to keep ideas flowing and anticipation of more to do.  The last day of "going rogue" really took off after lunch.  There was a lot of energy in that place and we were having a blast.  Some really great things happened too. WET CYANOTYPE with Suzanne Moseley

She communicated well and is, herself, an excellent fiber instructor and artist. She has beautiful, hand-made items and wonderful fabrics and other fiber arts supplies to sell also.  Ask Suzanne to add you to the email list to receive next year's schedule. Classes fill up fast. • Jo ***** Patterning the Pattern is about deconstructing and transforming dyed fabric patterns into new pieced/quilted fabrications for actual use in simple garment silhouettes. Overall, Patterning the Pattern covers an informative and valuable topic taught by a thoughtful, experienced designer/teacher. I would definitely take this class again. Amy is unique in her ability to bridge textile design with quilting and garment design. She generously shared her exceptional knowledge base using clear phrasing and life metaphors. The numerous samples and garments were inspiring and provided insight into her design process. Amy facilitated learning by offering time to explore, develop, and refine our individual skills from our unique perspectives. She works at providing balanced feedback to all students and also accepts input and the expansion of ideas from all. My great aha moment came when Amy explored ways to deconstruct and reconstruct patterns from dyed textiles. This course was a natural follow up to her 5-day workshop, Process + Awareness + Connection. Amy (and AYA) forged new territory by offering a class that moved beyond 2D surface design and gave participants the courage to move into garment shape-making with the potential to assemble their garments after the class. She did a great job of introducing simple garment patternmaking to these participants. It’s ambitious to make and fit, even a simple garment, in a 3-day workshop. I’m glad this was part of the content, but wonder how it might be consolidated in the future? Perhaps begin with textiles, followed by garment shapes and integration? That way, anyone with more patternmaking experience (like me) could begin working with textile patterns. And, as others worked on garment patterns, if they finished their muslin earlier, they could work on stitching. PATTERNING THE PATTERN with Amy Nguyen

  • Susan ***** Great workshop.   Enjoyed the process and finished work IN THE BAG AND OUTSIDE THE BOX   with Claudia Lee

  • PJ ***** Aya Studio is a place to explore and find new ways of looking at patterns and fabric techniques.  Suzanne, the owner has created a marvelous space to expand creativity.  Amy Nguyen is a thoughtful and articulate artist who is willing to share her thoughts on designs.  My time at the workshop will continue to be valuable as I work with new ways to create stunning garments. PJ Bergin, Colorado PATTERNING THE PATTERN with Amy Nguyen

  • Dolores **** Great topic, class, community, and facility! This was a good follow up to the first class but needed a few more days in the studio. While we left with lots of ideas to follow-up on at home, I wish I had more concrete examples to take with me as a few people did. Sewing Machines would have been helpful to create samples; handwork takes a lot of time. I'm conflicted about the draping to create a pattern. While it was a neat experience, it took a lot of time and still requires a long way to go before becoming a garment.  I would suggest considering a simpler approach by giving a choice of a friendship jacket or something else. It could still be tweaked for each person but allow for time to experiment with different ways to play with the surface pattern through  paint, quilt or puzzle piecing, etc. All of the other elements of the class would still be included while allowing for experimentation, trouble-shooting, sharing , peer in-put and collaboration. A finished product doesn't have to be the goal but I'd like to feel as if I had a better foundation or more confidence in the tools, techniques, etc. that I was exposed to. Rather than feeling overwhelmed by a plethora of choices, limited options might allow more people to get into the play/experiment mode more easily or quickly even without a solid sewing background. I enjoyed it all: a wonderful few days with really lovely, supportive people. I look forward to seeing what we all come up with! Thank you, Amy, Suzanne, and all my textile friends! PATTERNING THE PATTERN with Amy Nguyen

  • Joan ***** I enjoyed every aspect of Amy's class. Amy clearly has a profound talent and yet she is able to communicate on our level. I also appreciated the fact that she wants us to create "our" work as opposed to a copy of her work - as if we could! I do hope you will have Amy back next year - count me in if you do. Joan Rhue-Smith PROCESS + AWARENESS + CONNECTION with Amy Nguyen

  • Shirley ***** Amy Nguyen was such an inspiring instructor.  I learned so much. AYA is a very well equipped and ventilated studio. PROCESS + AWARENESS + CONNECTION with Amy Nguyen

  • Sharon ***** The studio was impressively well-equipped, organized and clean. Suzanne went out of her way to make us feel welcome and valued. • Cynthia ***** The workshop with Asushi Futatsuya was all I had hoped it would be, plus more, and Aya Fiber Studio provided a comfortable and inspirational space. Sashiko Class Core & Essence, plus Application

  • Diane ***** Wonderful experience, start to finish. Suzanne Connors is a deeply creative and knowledgeable resource, and a gracious host. Her studio is nicely set up for workshops - plenty of light and space. There were 12 in our group, all interesting and creative individuals in their own right. Several were also teachers, which says a lot about the quality and level of Suzanne's workshops. The Sashiko workshop I took (with the amazing Atsushi Futatsuya) was just the right mix of information sharing and hands-on work. It was accessible for all levels of ability too, which made the workshop especially enjoyable. Highly recommend! Sashiko Class Core & Essence, plus Application

  • Kathy ***** Loved the Sashiko class! Sashiko Class Core & Essence, plus Application

  • Gretchen ***** Wonderful supportive teaching, presentation of alternate outcomes, playful, no negatives, tremendous patience, fun, respectful. I was so pleased by the building of a community of artists to do shibori dyeing of all different kinds, styles and results in just five full days of teaching and fun.  Suzanne is amazing inspiring and orchestrating the class. COLOR AND LAYERING IN SHIBORI with Doshi

  • Marnie *** I enjoyed the workshop and learned a number of new techniques. Doshi is an very good instructor with a wealth of knowledge. Suzanne was adept at handling any situation that can up, and offered to help me with a baggage problem, which she didn't need to do and I really appreciated. Suzanne knows how to run an excellent studio, but in my opinion, she needs a larger studio to be bigger and host a dyeing workshop. For example, there were 8 of us in the workshop and as a group we needed to choose the one color that we all would dye with that day, a restraint that hampered my creativity. As a program chair in our guild, our instructors take on between 18 - 25 students and with a larger studio, Suzanne could have perhaps twice the students and everyone would benefit, Suzanne, teachers and students. Doshi knows her what she is teaching, no doubt about that. She could improve by spreading her time working with all students more equally and not spend most of her time with the one student she knows best. Making sure she visits each student in turn, checking for their grasp of concepts and clearing up confusion would help all students have a satisfactory experience. Also, she can let everyone know she is about to demo a technique so everyone can watch if they are interested. COLOR AND LAYERING IN SHIBORI with Doshi

  • Molly ***** This was the best class in botanical printing that I have ever taken. The group was great, and Suzanne the instructor was top notch. You can’t go wrong! 3 DAY BOTANICAL PRINT WORKSHOP

  • Kathleen ***** This workshop was so informative and instructive in so many different dyeing techniques and our instructor was fabulous.  The studio itself was well prepped and had everything we would need.  Fantastic place to take a workshop!  Very enjoyable! • Jan ***** Bryan has a fascinating background, great skills and knowledge of traditional fiber arts and Japanese culture. Our class worked hard on shibori, katazome and related skills for the 10 days, most often from early morning until late evening. I learned a lot, and increased my skills. I learned from my classmates as well as from Bryan. The setting was charming if a little crowded, and the food was excellent. All in all, a great experience. Bryan was sick and I understand the limitations that entailed in his energy and attention. I was quite disappointed that we did not do more outside the farmhouse and did not experience more of Japanese culture with him. I, for one, would have come back a stronger and more engaged student if we had time with him in a city or town experiencing more about kimono, textiles or any aspect of culture as a break. We did briefly go to the pottery and out for two local meals but that was it. I had expected that cultural aspect and did treasure his discussions and stories. Most of my fellow students were fully engaged and kind in what could be a very crowded and sometimes stressful setting. I would visit Japan again in a heartbeat and would consider taking his hanten class if I knew the class size and could count on some cultural activities. JAPAN TEXTILE TOUR- October 2023

  • Delores **** Amy Nguyen introduced us to a different approach to creating cloth. It was an inspirational class with a wonderful group of women who shared ideas and experiences.  Process became a real focus and is worth exploring more deeply. PROCESS + AWARENESS + CONNECTION

  • Karen **** AYA studios is truly a blessing and I thank you Suzanne for creating this wonderful environment. Bringing in the level of talent that you do is truly a gift to the fiber community. I would be their more often if I could handle the Travel cost. So, I only signup for workshops with those at the top of my list of wearable Artist.  I as many have been anxiously awaiting Amy’s workshop. The work I have seen of hers is some of the best in the wearable art industry in my opinion.  I was so happy for the opportunity to learn more about her creations and how she does these beautiful techniques. The comradery and the atmosphere of creative women all together is so worth any workshop to me. However, I have to say by day 3,  I felt that I may not come away with new ideas and techniques from this workshop. I’ve been in a lot of shibori workshops. I can take more of that locally without travel expense. I’ve done a lot of Folding, stitching, binding and some indigo.  I felt the understanding of how to take these pieces further was missing until Lindsey brought in her pieces, and then the next day we got to see some samples and the last day the slides and more explanation of the techniques. I feel if we had started here, it would create more motivation and direction for students to choose what to put their time into.  This would have opened the door for consulting with Amy on ideas and next steps. I have to be honest with you because I value the success of AYA, Suzanne and Amy. I hesitated to say these things, but I heard these same things from at least 4 others in the class. PROCESS + AWARENESS + CONNECTION

  • Jan ***** Amy is an excellent teacher and I enjoy the blending of movement work with the physical and mental work of color and shibori. I would gladly enroll in an advanced class focusing on garment design and construction if she ever offers one! Deconstructing Nature with Kerr Grabowski

  • Ginny ***** Instructor/owner, Suzanne, was very, very knowledgeable and generous with her lessons.  The studio leads to creativity with the inspirational work displayed around the room. The balance of instruction to hands on is perfect.  Working area is very organized and we were able to take home several finished projects.  I will return for future classes/studio time.  Two BLUE thumbs up! INTRO TO SHIBORI and INDIGO

  • Elaine ***** Amy's class presented a different way of looking at creating patterns and making them your own. Sher started at the basic level and expanded over and over to demonstrate to each class member how they could enlarge on what they had just completed. • Shay ***** I absolutely loved this class!  Suzanne is knowledgable about all things SHIBORI and Indigo! I learned so much during one day there, I didn't want to leave. She fosters a welcoming and creative atmosphere no matter what your experience level and teaches with kindness and patience. If you show up with curiosity and a willingness to experiment with a few of the myriad of techniques she explains, you will arrive with a plain pile of white cloth and leave with the most magical, beautiful, indigo fabrics. The studio is clean, well-organized, and stocked with all the materials and tools you could need except for your own and fabric and imagination. • Sandra ***** To be honest I was expecting a beginner’s basic class but found that I was the only beginner who had never done eco-printing. The other 4 attendees, in my opinion, were advanced students who brought a lot of materials and knew many techniques whereas this was the first class I had ever attended. Suzanne and the other attendees, shared their cloth with me and I got to observe their ideas/techniques and share in their lovely final results. Thank you for for expanding my knowledge and experience of eco-printing! INTRO TO ECO-PRINT
