Supply List For Students to Bring:
Paper:
At least 6 sheets of Assorted Western Papers: 140 lb paper is good. Cold press or hot press is fine. I like Arches, Stonehenge, Fabriano, Rives BFK, Bristol. It should be large enough to wrap around your panels. Doesn’t hurt to bring extra if you work fast or want to create larger, unmounted works.
At least 4 sheets of Thai Kozo paper- https://www.dickblick.com/items/thai-kozo-paper-25-x-37-35-gsm-single-sheet/ if out of stock then get Awagami kozo (it’s smaller and more expensive though, so I prefer Thai Kozo)

Please bring additional interesting Asian papers you may have on hand or any papers you wish to include in your work. Please do not bring sumi ink practice paper rolls or pads. It is not strong enough for our processes.
Optional Collage material: This may include newspapers, books, or magazine pages, photography, or prints- just make sure if you want to paint on photos that they are printed on matte art papers rather than glossy photo paper.
Panel-Supports:
4-6 approximately 12” x 12” flat (7/8” thick) cradled panels (not gessoed) from Blick https://www.dickblick.com/items/07044-1212/ or http://www.dickblick.com/items/07049-1212/ uncradled panels and rectangular 11” x 14” panels are fine too.
I prefer thinner panels so that the sides are less fragile as we stretch the paper over the sides to the back. Often people wish they had more panels so bring extra if you can. If anyone wants to go larger and make fewer quantity but focus on just a couple larger works, that’s ok, too. You can also go larger by placing smaller panels together. OK to only work on paper, unmounted as well.
Note: some people labor over only 2 paintings and other make 12 and mount only 6. Judge the amount of paper and panels accordingly. I prefer for you to have lots of paper to create with. Optional collage papers- anything is fine. I have had people make books and more sculptural work, stitch into the pieces and not mount the work at all. If desired, make sure you bring needles, thread- anything additional you’ll want to have- we use Nori paste for our adhesive.
Other Materials:
Watercolor brushes- variety of sizes – some small and up to 3”, hardware brushes are good too. If you have hakes or other Asian brushes,, then please bring them. Foam brushes and old scruffy brushes are great too.
Sumi stick and Suzuri (ink stone) if you already have any, is fine; otherwise, here is the link to purchase one. https://a.co/d/b3cMMr0
A piece of premium felt (I prefer grey or black), approximately 36” square or larger, from a fabric store. A towel (any solid color) is fine if you don’t want to own a “sumi” felt.
Soft Pencil, eraser, and any other natural colored dry drawing media you wish to bring to incorporate. You can also get some interesting resists using crayons or anything waxy (again- stick to white, black, or earth tones). Clear wax resist crayons are also nice. Adding these are all optional additions for mark-making.
Optional pattern sources - stencils (wire mesh, cheese cloth) and mark making tools – we can also find things in nature to use. I do not use premade stencils in my work, but I am open to those who want to use them. Bring a piece of lace, a grocery netted fruit/veggie bag and the likes to get an oxidation pattern on the work if desired.
Optional Metal Leaf: If you would like to incorporate imitation gold, silver, aluminum or copper leaf in your work, please bring it. I will have Japanese silver for the class to share during the workshop. If you want your own pack of Japanese silver to take home, then please let me know as soon as possible and I will order you a pack at a charge of aprox $20 USD (50 leaves). I collect this at the end of the workshop and the rate changes slightly according to current exchange rates. This extra silver is not included in your materials fee. Japanese silver oxidizes beautifully and is much finer than any other you can purchase anywhere else. Most people want to have it.
Scissors
A sketch pad – any size to draw from nature
2 water containers (plastic is fine) i.e. cottage cheese, yogurt, etc..
2 cereal-sized bowls (ceramic, metal, glass), not plastic
Please bring some examples of your work to show the class during introductions. It can be on a thumb drive or website or in print. I’ll have my computer and a projector if you want to air drop them to me in class or opt to show your web or social media. This show and tell is optional and brief.
Please bring packing materials to safely transport your work home and label your supplies. A tube is good for rolling papers.
