After the activity of summer—and before the celebrations and obligations of the holiday season—these quieter months offer a welcome opportunity to slow down, learn something new, and reconnect with our creativity.
Perhaps this is the perfect time to plan a creative vacation.
At Aya Fiber Studio, we often call these experiences fibercations—opportunities where learning, travel, community, and creative renewal come together. Instead of rushing through a short project, you can step away from your everyday routine and spend focused time working with cloth, color, stitch, print, and process.
From September and October in the Southern Appalachian Mountains to the opening of our Stuart, Florida, season on November 9, Aya offers several ways to make creativity part of your fall travels.
September and October in the Mountains
Our fall season begins in the mountains of western North Carolina and nearby north Georgia.
This is a beautiful time to visit the region. Cooler mornings arrive, summer green gradually gives way to autumn color, and the landscape itself becomes a source of inspiration.
September workshops offer opportunities to explore shibori, indigo, botanical printing, repetition, and pattern:

October brings Blue in the Mountains, an extended fiber retreat in Murphy, North Carolina. The retreat combines time for personal projects with shared experiences, visiting instructors, indigo, stitching, botanical processes, and the companionship of other fiber artists.
These mountain experiences are about more than studio instruction. They are an invitation to step away, breathe deeply, enjoy the changing season, and return to your creative work with renewed attention.

Follow Aya South to Stuart
As the mountain season comes to a close, Aya Fiber Studio returns to Stuart, Florida.
The Stuart workshop season begins November 9, with several creative opportunities scheduled through the end of the year.
The season opens with botanical printing, followed by shibori and indigo, expressive surface design, hand appliqué, Japanese textile traditions, and slow, thoughtful handwork.
Students can explore the marks plants leave on cloth, build pattern through resist and indigo, work intuitively with layered imagery, or discover how hand stitching can become a language for composition and personal storytelling.
For those drawn to experimental surface design, Kerr Grabowski’s four-day Deconstructed Immersion explores color, texture, layered imagery, and the beautifully unpredictable possibilities of deconstructed screen printing.
As November turns toward December, Heidi Parkes joins us for Hand Appliqué: From Tiny to Humongous, a five-day exploration of hand stitching, scale, treasured fabrics, improvisational composition, and personal storytelling through cloth.
Additional workshops continue through December, including opportunities to study shibori, indigo, stitching, and Japanese textile traditions through Aizome Studio.

A Studio Pass Might Be Just the Ticket
For many of us, it has been a while since we have spent meaningful time in the studio—or worked in the company of a creative community.
Beginning November 23, Aya Fiber Studio will offer several Open Studio Days throughout November and December. A Studio Pass might be just the ticket for returning to your creative practice before the year ends.
Bring a project you have been meaning to finish, revisit a technique you already know, or simply give yourself a few protected hours to make something with your hands.
There is no pressure to complete a particular project and no formal workshop agenda—just dedicated studio time, a welcoming creative workspace, and the pleasure of working alongside others.
Creative practice can become isolated, especially when life pulls us away from the studio. Open Studio Days provide an opportunity to reconnect—not only with our own work, but also with the conversation, encouragement, and shared energy that come from creating in community.

Aya Fiber Studio is a fully equipped working textile studio in Stuart, Florida. Workshops are intentionally small, generally limited to six to ten students. This creates space for individual instruction, meaningful conversation, and a more personal learning experience.
Many students travel from across the country and make their workshop part of a larger getaway. Stuart offers a welcoming historic downtown, waterfront restaurants, nearby beaches, galleries, and the relaxed pace of Florida’s Treasure Coast.
By late fall, it also offers something especially appealing: sunshine and warmth.
