Print and Play Dye Workshop
with Kevin Womack
Explore the layered, expressive possibilities of fiber-reactive dyes through printing, mark-making, and experimentation.
Mon, Feb 15 – Fri, Feb 19, 2027

About Fiber-Reactive Dyes
Fiber-reactive dyes are known for their vibrant color, permanence, and versatility on cellulose fibers such as cotton, rayon, and linen. Unlike surface pigments, these dyes chemically bond with the fiber, creating rich color saturation while maintaining the softness and flexibility of the cloth.
Their fluid nature makes them ideal for layering, printing, painting, and experimental surface design techniques.
About the Instructor
Kevin Womack is a textile artist and educator known for his energetic, improvisational approach to surface design and dye processes. His workshops encourage experimentation, intuition, and the development of personal visual language through layered textile techniques.
Kevin’s teaching style balances technical foundation with creative freedom, making his workshops welcoming for both beginners and experienced artists alike.
Studio Information
Workshops at Aya Fiber Studio are intentionally small to allow for individualized instruction and an immersive creative experience.
Students work in a fully equipped fiber arts studio with large worktables, professional dye areas, and a supportive learning environment designed for hands-on exploration.

About This Workshop
Discover the expressive potential of fiber-reactive dyes in this immersive, process-oriented workshop with textile artist Kevin Womack.
Working with both thickened and thin dye applications, students will create richly layered surfaces while exploring direct application, monoprinting, and screen-based printing techniques. Throughout the week, emphasis is placed on improvisation, intuitive mark-making, and developing your own unique visual language through repetition, layering, and experimentation.
Students will explore a wide range of approaches including stamping, stenciling, breakdown-style printing, monoprinting, screen-resist methods, and direct dye application. Color mixing and layering strategies will be introduced progressively, allowing participants to build confidence while discovering unexpected results through play and process.
This workshop encourages curiosity, experimentation, and creative freedom. Whether you’re new to dye techniques or looking to expand an existing surface design practice, you’ll leave with a deeper understanding of color, composition, and layered textile surfaces.

This is a process-based workshop designed to encourage exploration rather than perfection.
Students will produce a variety of sample pieces and experimental cloth while learning how layering, transparency, texture, and repetition interact within surface design. The emphasis is on discovery, risk-taking, and developing confidence through creative play.
-
This workshop is suitable for:
Beginners interested in textile dyeing and surface design
Fiber artists and mixed media artists
Quilters and textile enthusiasts
Printmakers looking to expand onto cloth
Surface designers seeking new techniques and inspiration
Artists interested in intuitive and experimental processes
No prior dye or printing experience is necessary.
-
Students can expect to work on a variety of sample fabrics while exploring multiple techniques throughout the week. Additional preparation notes and material recommendations will be shared prior to class.
