For larger bags, please adjust fabric amounts using the guide below.

Recommended Fabrics

  • Fabrics and samples from previous surface design work (shibori, batik, eco-print, etc.) are highly encouraged

  • Or: medium-weight linens, quilting cottons, or lightweight canvas

Fabric Requirements (6" Bag)

  • Exterior Fabric

    • ¼ yard or assorted scraps sufficient to create a 25" x 8" rectangle

  • Lining Fabric

    • ¼ yard (coordinating or contrasting)

  • Drawstring Tabs

    • Fabric to make tabs or twill tape, flat bias tape, or ribbon

  • Optional Appliqué Fabrics

    • Small pieces for layering and embellishment

Cord & Structure

  • Drawstring

    • 2 yards cotton cord or decorative cording

  • Interfacing (optional, depending on structure desired)

    • Pellon (general-purpose)

    • Felt (soft structure)

    • Fusible woven interfacing (more stability)

7" Finished Bag

  • Main Panels: 29" x 9" rectangle

  • Bottom Panel: 8" x 8" square

8" Finished Bag

  • Main Panels: 33" x 10" rectangle

  • Bottom Panel: 9" x 9" square

  • Tabs: 6 tabs recommended for balanced closure

Please bring additional fabric accordingly for exterior, lining, and any patchwork or appliqué.

Tools & Notions to Bring

  • Rotary cutter

  • Small cutting mat

  • Quilting ruler

  • Fabric scissors

  • Thread (neutral + coordinating)

  • Embroidery floss and/or sashiko thread

  • Pins and/or clips

  • Large safety pin (for threading drawstring)

Optional (Nice to Have)

  • Thimble

  • Marking tools (fabric pencil, chalk, or hera marker)

  • Small iron (if you prefer your own)

This project is an opportunity to bring together your personal cloth collection—layering pattern, texture, and stitch into a functional form. Bringing a range of fabrics will allow for more thoughtful composition and creative flexibility.
