🍃 A Beginner-Friendly Introduction to Botanical Printing on Cloth
Discover the art of eco-printing — a process that captures the delicate shapes, colors, and patterns of leaves and flowers directly onto fabric.
In this hands-on introductory workshop, Suzanne Connors will guide students through each stage of the eco-printing process, from plant selection and fabric preparation to bundling, steaming, and unveiling finished prints. Participants will explore how tannins, mordants, heat, moisture, and pressure interact to create subtle and often surprising botanical impressions on cloth.
Throughout the day, students will create a series of fabric samples while learning the foundations needed to continue exploring botanical printing independently. Each participant will also complete a finished scarf or cloth piece using natural leaves and botanical materials.
The experience is equal parts alchemy and artistry — revealing how simple organic materials can produce layered, atmospheric, and deeply personal textile surfaces.
This workshop also serves as the recommended prerequisite for students planning to participate in the 4-Day Botanical Print Immersion later in the week.

For introductory eco-print workshops, we will work with protein fibers only such as silk and wool.
✨ A fabric and materials kit is provided for the Intro Workshop
$65 Materials FeeThe kit includes prepared fabrics and shared materials needed for the printing process. No mordanting will take place during the introductory session.
Students Still Need to Bring:
✅ (2) wood dowels — approximately 1” diameter × 16” long
✅ Leaves for printing (high tannin leaves such as eucalyptus are recommended)
✅ Old bed sheets torn into 2” strips or 4–6 ACE bandages for bundling
✅ Apron and studio clothes
✅ Gloves (tight-fitting nitrile or surgical style)
✅ Scissors and garden snips
✅ Notebook and pencil
✅ Smartphone or camera for documenting results
🌿 In our Eco-Print workshops at Aya Fiber Studio, the focus is on learning through hands-on experimentation and process exploration. Students will create a wide variety of samples designed to help build confidence, understanding, and repeatable techniques at home.
Rather than focusing on producing finished items for sale, participants will leave with a collection of valuable reference samples — including both successful and unexpected results — that become an important part of the learning process.
