A focused two-day intensive introducing the foundational principles of shibori resist and indigo dyeing within the Aizome Shibori Signature Series.

Working on authentic Japanese tenugui cotton fabric, students explore how cloth structure, folding, and binding influence the movement of indigo. Using traditional tools and materials, emphasis is placed on developing control—understanding how tension, compression, and preparation shape pattern and clarity.

On the first day, students will prepare an indigo vat, gaining insight into the chemistry and balance required for successful dyeing. This vat is then used throughout the workshop, allowing participants to observe how indigo behaves over time.

Over two days, participants move beyond initial exploration into refinement. Through repeated binding and multiple dye cycles, students begin to recognize how small adjustments in process produce meaningful shifts in outcome.

Instruction is responsive and individualized, supporting both new and returning students. Beginners build confidence and foundational skills, while more experienced participants refine technique and develop greater precision.

Students will complete multiple dyed tenugui and/or working cloth samples. Emphasis is placed on process and observation rather than a predetermined finished item.

Part of the Aizome Shibori Signature Series. This workshop may be taken individually or as the first step in a progressive course of study.
