Shibori Fundamentals: A One-Day Introduction & Practice
An Aizome Studio Signature Series Workshop with Suzanne Connors
Founder of Aya Fiber Studio and creator of the Signature Shibori Series, specializing in Japanese indigo and process-driven shibori techniques.
Tuition: $180
Workshop Dates this season: (all workshops 10am- 4pm)
What You’ll Leave With
One or more finished dyed cloth pieces
Foundational skills for continued shibori exploration
A deeper understanding of indigo process and resist design
Who This Workshop Is For
Beginners with no prior dye experience
Returning students wishing to refine technique
Artists and makers exploring surface design
Anyone interested in Japanese textile traditions and indigo dyeing
A focused one-day immersion into the foundations of Japanese shibori resist and indigo dyeing, designed for both first-time and returning students.
Working with authentic Japanese tenugui cotton, students are introduced to the essential principles of cloth manipulation, resist, and indigo process. Through folding, binding, wrapping, and compression techniques, participants learn how pattern emerges through tension, pressure, repetition, and the careful relationship between cloth and dye.
Each workshop introduces two shibori approaches. Students then select a pathway aligned with their experience level, allowing both beginners and returning students to work side-by-side while developing at different depths. New students focus on foundational skills and confidence-building, while returning students may explore increased precision, repetition, variation, and refinement within the same techniques.
Dyeing is done using a high-quality pre-reduced indigo sourced from Japan, allowing students to complete the full dye process within a single day. Through multiple dips and oxidation cycles, participants experience how indigo develops gradually — building depth, contrast, and richness over time.
All techniques are carefully chosen to be completed within the workshop timeframe, including binding, dyeing, rinsing, and finishing, so students leave with a complete understanding of the process from start to finish.
Instruction is individualized and responsive, and no two sessions are exactly alike. This workshop may be taken more than once, as each offering presents variation in technique, cloth, and outcome.
Rooted in traditional Japanese resist methods, this class emphasizes process, discipline, and material awareness over the pursuit of a predetermined finished item.
What You’ll Learn
How resist techniques create pattern in cloth
The fundamentals of working with an indigo vat
Indigo vat etiquette and handling practices
Folding, binding, wrapping, and buffering methods
How to plan and execute simple shibori designs
How repeated dipping and oxidation affect color depth and pattern clarity

Looking Ahead
This workshop also serves as a foundation for students interested in continuing into the Aizome Shibori Signature Series, including:
The Shibori Mastery Retreat featuring a traditional sukumo indigo vat
Small-group instruction allows time for individualized guidance, observation, and hands-on support throughout the day — an essential part of learning the subtle physical language of cloth, resist, and indigo.

Inspired by traditional Japanese shibori methods, the Aizome Shibori Stand is designed to support cloth during pole-wrapping and resist-dye processes. The elevated structure allows fabric to move smoothly while wrapping, binding, pleating, and compressing cloth for dynamic pattern development.
Whether you are exploring tesuji shibori, arashi-inspired techniques, or experimental resist work, this stand creates a more ergonomic and efficient workflow compared to working directly on a table surface.
Perfect for both beginners and experienced dyers, the stand pairs beautifully with indigo dyeing, katazome studies, and layered surface-design techniques taught through Aya Fiber Studio and Aizome Studio.
