“From the author of Fabric Surface Design”
Discover the creative possibilities that emerge when paint, cloth, and stitch come together through an intuitive process of layering, printing, and mark-making.
Join acclaimed fiber artist, educator, and author Cheryl Rezendes for four days of exploration into abstract monoprinting on cloth. Working without stencils, stamps, or rigid patterns, students will learn a spontaneous and highly creative approach to building rich, layered surfaces that reflect their own artistic voice.
Throughout the workshop, participants will create a series of unique monoprints on cloth using a process that encourages experimentation, discovery, and intuitive decision-making. As each layer is printed and allowed to dry, the cloth returns to the printing surface to receive additional imagery, color, texture, and visual depth. Cheryl will demonstrate a simple registration method that makes it easy to align multiple layers while maintaining the freedom and energy that make monoprinting so exciting.
Working on multiple pieces simultaneously allows ideas to evolve naturally while encouraging risk-taking and creative play. Students will learn how layered imagery develops over time and how unexpected marks often become the most compelling elements of a composition.
Once the printed surfaces are complete, participants will explore simple collage techniques by incorporating elements cut from their own printed cloth. The workshop concludes with hand stitching as a design element, using techniques such as running stitch, back stitch, and French knots to add line, movement, emphasis, and visual rhythm.
Rather than approaching stitch as decoration, Cheryl encourages students to use thread as a drawing tool—an expressive mark-making language that enhances and completes the printed imagery.
Students will leave with a collection of original textile artworks along with the skills, techniques, and confidence to continue exploring monoprinting and stitch in their own creative practice.

Monoprinting is a printmaking process that creates unique, one-of-a-kind images. Unlike traditional printmaking methods that produce multiples, each monoprint is an original work. In this workshop, students will learn how to build layers of imagery on cloth using intuitive techniques that encourage experimentation and discovery.
-
No prior printmaking experience is required. Cheryl's approach is accessible to beginners while offering plenty of depth for experienced artists. The emphasis is on process, exploration, and developing your own creative voice.
