Altered Mica Book Workshop with Daniel Essig

Apr 13, 2027 – Apr 16, 2027 | AYA FIBER STUDIO

Books have long served as vessels for memory, story, and treasured objects. In this immersive four-day workshop, nationally recognized book artist Daniel Essig will guide participants through the creation of a hand-bound artist book that transcends the traditional page, becoming a sculptural object filled with personal meaning and discovery.

Using the elegant and enduring Coptic binding structure, students will first construct a book incorporating fine papers and rigid translucent mica sheets. This historic binding technique is celebrated for its strength, flexibility, and ability to open completely flat, making it an ideal foundation for creative exploration.

Once the book is bound, participants will transform its pages into a landscape of hidden spaces, niches, alcoves, and secret compartments designed to hold treasured objects, images, writings, and collected materials. Through a process of cutting, layering, constructing, and embellishing, each book will evolve into a unique personal artifact.

A special focus of the workshop will be working with mica, both natural and manufactured forms. Students will learn how to cut, shape, layer, and integrate this remarkable translucent material into their book structures while gaining an understanding of its unique characteristics and possibilities.

Throughout the workshop, Daniel will demonstrate techniques for combining mica, handmade papers, found objects, and bookbinding methods to push traditional book forms into the realm of sculpture. Participants will be encouraged to explore themes of memory, collection, preservation, and storytelling as they develop their individual projects.

This workshop is suitable for book artists, mixed-media artists, fiber artists, paper enthusiasts, and anyone interested in creating meaningful handmade objects. No previous bookbinding experience is required.
